Sephoria followed somewhat close to Ineirin as she spoke to the prince.
"Ego? I've actually met that foul wench Rousseau. It was around 30 or so years ago. She kept a lower profile then, but she was very powerful. She served as an adviser to the Emperor. We were oath bound to overlook her transgressions then, but to have the audacity to crown herself Emperess ..."
The woman was cut off as something caught her eye. She suddenly ran forward ahead of the searching knights. A bit further down the corridor the monster hunter found herself stopping at a large wall hung tapestry. It seemed identical to a few others they had passed. Something had drawn her to it though.
"You always did enjoy having a black rose," Sephoria mused to herself almost inaudibly. "You must have thought no one was watching while you perused the gardens, and always corrupted one of them to look the way you wanted it to. That no one would remember years later."
She pushed at the black material of a rose on the tapestry, but there was no movement of the brick behind it. That had been the subtle difference between this and the other tapestries of the same design that they had passed. In frustration the royal guardsman ripped the tapestry from its hangers. It fell to the ground and the woman went to work inspecting the wall. She pushed on several of the bricks when suddenly there was some movement.
A mechanism in the wall clicked and a section of the wall was starting to rotate to reveal an opening. A sword blade was the first thing to emerge from the wall. It was followed by a human man in a fine silk servants jerkin. The dagger at her side was much faster than drawing a sword. It came up and shot forth into the mans throat before he was even fully out of the hidden passage.
Blood spewed as she pulled the blade out. He tried to sound an alarm, but a coughing gurgling sound was all he could manage before she pulled him from the passage way and drove the dagger through his heart.
"Go," came the hurried whisper from Sephoria to the Knights of the Gull. They still had the element of surprise. This passage would no doubt lead to servants quarters, which would lead to the Empress' throne room or to her personal apartments.
