NAME: Nordengard
KINGDOM AT A GLANCE: In the far arctic northwest within the frozen mountains stands the city of Nordengard, the kingdom of the mighty Nordenfiir (bear shifters).
SIZE AND LOCATION: As the capital city, Nordengard is the largest of their keeps, carved out of glacier and stone. The Kingdom itself is massive and sprawling in comparison to many other great Kingdoms of Ardell, but only due to the means of living the Nordenfiir keep. As a people their Kingdom spans along numerous smaller keeps and towns within a long chain of mountains leading down the the arctic west and into the more temperate forests far northwest of Ashdell. Their northermost boarder sits up against the frozen shoreline.
WEALTH: High - The Kingdom of Nordengard lays claim to many rich mines within the mountain range; both for precious stone, gold and metal ores.
STABILITY: Low - presently. A major coup against King Iordahn saw the royal family and their closest supporters slaughtered. The people of Nordengard are divided under the rule of the new King Borvenir, with his own supporters being a large majority. Iordahn's Guard, or what was left of it, has scattered to outlying towns to escape persecution and Borvenir's hunt to eradicate the old regime.
DANGER TO TRAVELERS: High - Under Iordahn's rule there was a tenuous but peaceful relation with the southern Kingdoms of Ardell. Trade was strong despite the wary relations. Though over many decades Iordahn had established greater trust between the Nordenfiir and the local human Kingdomgs, Borvenir had always been staunchly against it. Now, under the new King's rule, trade has ground to a complete halt and borders have been closed. Borvenir's Guard has been given the orders to take interloping humans prisoner.
FORM OF GOVERNMENT: Though reign of Nordengard is and has been handed down through bloodlines, it is not unheard of for the right to rule to be challenged in a duel to the death. Similar in fashion to what you might observe in the wild, in the rare instance that this challenge occurs and the challenger wins - the next step is then to eradicate all of the remaining former ruling bloodline. Nordengard was previously ruled as a Monarchy under King Iordahn. King Borvenir has not sat the throne long enough to have a firm grasp of his system, but thus far it's looking to be turning into a total Dictatorship. Borvenir has slaughtered the old regime's Council as well as Iordahn's descendants, and has been positioning his own Guard throughout the lands of Nordengard at every major city to ensure his transition to rule goes without stumble.
FREEDOM AND OPPRESSION: Nordengard is presently saturated in a state of aggression and fear. Those serving under the new King are rewarded for their loyalty while those still mourning the loss of the old regime have scattered to the outskirts of the Kingdom to lay low. All mention of the former regime is strictly forbidden and all statues and effigies of the late King Iordahn are being systematically destroyed. Trade with foreign Kingdoms has been shut down, borders have been closed, sentries have been stationed at every major through-way into and out of Nordengard territory. Humans are no longer permitted, and those unfortunate souls that were trapped within the realm during the coup have been taken prisoner, murdered, or forced into slavery.
COMMON SPECIES: Nordenfiir make up the vast majority of the population within Nordengard. There exists a very small human population of prisoners and slaves. A smattering of other makes up a small 5% of the rest - various beastfolk, shifters, Elves, Dwarves, those that were given permission or invited to Nordengard specifically by Borvenir for his own machinations.
MILITARY FOCUS: The Nordenfiir are a warrior race to the bone that has spent the last century developing a deeper culture and expanding its territory. They know their mountains well and they protect them fiercely. Every Nordenfiir receives combat training and every adult has their own set of armor. While not all Norden's may go on to dedicate their lives to battle, every last one of them can serve in war.
