NAME: Empire of Arlek (AKA Arlekkian Empire, Kingdom of Arlek)
KINGDOM AT A GLANCE:
A bustling realm located at the junction of two major rivers, the Empire of Arlek has developed from a cluster of river-bound tribes to a nation well known for it's martial prowess and unyielding. The kingdom is led by a single monarch who holds authority over the realm, but is advised by the Council; a group of eleven individuals selected by merit to advise Throne in all matters. Arlek is a rapidly expanding country and is eager to solidify its hold both on the land and waters it claims for the crown.
SIZE AND LOCATION: A medium sized kingdom located due south of Pakellan, Arlek straddles the junction of two major rivers.
WEALTH: Arlek is fairly wealthy for its size, taking advantage of trade moving up and down the rivers and along the land that it occupies.
STABILITY: With a single, strong monarch and a well trained and equipped military, Arlek can be considered one of the more stable countries of the region.
DANGER TO TRAVELERS: Roads and rivers are patrolled with some frequency and those caught breaking the law are dealt with quickly and harshly, with the harshest treatment reserved for bandits and highwaymen.
FORM OF GOVERNMENT: Arlek is a monarchy at heart and is ruled entirely by the King. Advising him and acting, in theory, on behalf of the people as a whole stand the Council, a group of eleven individuals selected by merit to represent the empire and advise the King on various matters within the realm. As a rule of thumb, the nobility and active members of the military are barred from sitting upon the Council.
FREEDOM AND OPPRESSION: Freedoms within Arlek are limited, to some extent, such that are normal within near-absolute monarchies. A patriarchal society, it is rare to find women in roles outside of the household, though this is hardly the rule. Though uncommon, it is possible to find women in other roles, even within the military, though this is almost always considered an oddity. In addition, non-humans find life within Arlekkian borders somewhat difficult. Seen as sub-human, non-humans and ab-humans are often considered second-class citizens and are often outright discriminated against. Oddly enough, slavery is considered illegal and viewed as a heinous crime no matter the victim.
COMMON SPECIES: Primarily humans with a small minority of ab-humans and non-humans.
MILITARY FOCUS:
Arlek relies on a core body of well trained, disciplined, and equipped troops to guard its borders and expand its territories. The primary military focus is set upon a "shot and pike" formation comprised of rear ranks of crossbowmen, middle ranks of pikemen, and front ranks consisting of swordsmen equipped with shields. In support of these formations the military fields light and medium cavalry drawn from Arlekkian nobility as well as crossbow and sword armed dragoons drawn from the common folk.
Deployed ahead of the army in wartime and tasked with patrolling the country during peacetime stand the Arlekkian Rangers. Drawn from hunters, woodsmen, and the best sharpshooters and scouts of the regular military, the Rangers are atypical of the standard army and are equipped with crossbows featuring mild enchantments. A full dossier on the Rangers are in a following document below.
Outside of this, the military is supported by a wide array of auxiliaries pulled from regions under Arlekkian control as well as engineers, artillerists, and the occasional battlemage. Occasionally one may spot a Beastmaster, but this is a rare occurrence usually only seen when the King or one of the royal family has joined or leads the army.
TECHNOLOGY: Early Renaissance, though there is a lack of gunpowder-style weaponry.
PLAYER CONTROLLED: No, though controlling individual noble houses, guilds, and such is allowed if desired and within reason. Preferably a single house, guild, etc per writer total.
