To Elbion, with Love

On the Eastern Road to Elbion
Darrik rode the dark colored destrier with a solemn face deliberately. The moonlight fell across the road and the man knew tomorrow it would shine full in the night sky. His horse needed new shoes, he needed food and water. Badly. That was the only reason he was risking making the journey into civilization with so little time to spare.
At this pace the Knight would arrive just before dawn, before the shops opened. There he could stable his horse for the next few days and get the supplies he needed, a hot breakfast before he left on foot for the mountains. One day's travel would put him out in the middle of nowhere, but it wasn't like he couldn't find his way back for better or for worse.
The horse shook its head and stamped its hooves, tired from the long ride. "We'll be there soon boy." The knight patted the creature's neck with a gauntlet covered hand and turned his eyes back to the road, smelling the air for anything of note. Other than the presence of horses earlier in the day the way seemed clear to the city.
It had been months since Darrik had ridden out to the eastern forest, but even there he did not find the solace or companionship he craved. The secrets of his being were long lost, taken with his Father's life years ago, and now the Knight roamed Ardell seeking answers to questions he barely knew existed. Elbion would hold few if any of these answers, assuming he bothered to tell anyone his secret. As far as he was aware he had sired no offspring in any fashion, and left few if any witnesses in his wake, neither were things he was necessarily happy about.
Cold blue eyes fell upon the closed gate as the tired knight rode up to the city in the darkness before dawn. His colors were old and worn, faded and not all remembered the House of Eckhardt which had so long and so faithfully represented honor and martial prowess, but he wore them nonetheless.
